This experience encouraged him to live in one country for an extended period of time. He chose Japan! Chris lived on the island of Kyushu for 3 years in the late 1980s, learned to speak fluent Japanese and met his wife there. Ultimately, that experience led him to create his company Pitkin Stearns International. For 30+ years, Pitkin Stearns has exported end consumer goods to Japan. In 2007, Chris decided to start importing as well. Pitkin Stearns now is the US exclusive agent for several high-quality consumer end products. Chris and his wife have three young adult children. Larry Borger is the newest, and at age 86, the oldest member of the CWAL Board. He and Marilyn, his wife of 64 years have two grown sons and four granddaughters and have lived in Littleton since 1964. They moved to Littleton so that Larry could complete the requirements for a Masters Degree in Public Administration / City Management from the University of Kansas. His 21 year career in local government included posts as City Manager of Littleton, Deputy Director of the Denver Regional Council of Governments and Administrative Assistant to Denver Mayor, Bill McNichols. He followed that with another 20 year career in the private sector as a Vice President of Sanford Homes and a Realtor. But the family always lived in and loved Littleton.
He sees his value to CWAL in sharing his interesting experiences and historical stories of events and projects familiar to CWAL riders and pilots. For example, he directly participated in or was a witness to such local history, as the 1965 South Platte River flood, the construction of Chatfield Reservoir, the creation of the South Platte Park, the purchase of Ketring Park and Lake, the creation of the Littleton Museum, the creation of Arapahoe Community College, the creation of the Mary Carter Greenway, the creation of Hudson Gardens, the preservation of the historic Arapahoe County Courthouse, the City wide program of planting flowering crabapple trees and creation of the Littleton Crabapple Route.
Currently his particular interest is in preserving the history of the City Ditch, the oldest man-made landscape feature in the entire Front Range which flows through Littleton. It still functions today just as it did right after the “Colorado Gold Rush.” It is an irrigation ditch whose water turned the dusty frontier town of Denver green and it proved to frontier farmers that, with irrigation water, the “Great American Desert” could be made to bloom. Today the Ditch, using an1860 decree, the oldest water right on the South Platte River, diverts water from the River to irrigate the landscaping at Hudson Gardens, the Littleton Cemetery and Geneva Lake and Park. The Littleton Community Trail, which is used for Trishaw rides, is built on top of the pipeline which encases the flowing water for most of the ditch’s route through Littleton. More CWAL passengers seeing the actual ditch will help preserve its legacy.
